THE FUTURE OF SCOLIOSIS TREATMENT
An analysis of 51 DNA markers associated with scoliosis has allowed determination of three specific groups of patients:
1. No risk for progression, (no treatment, only follow up for confirmation).
2. Moderate risk, (Conservative treatment- ie PT and bracing).
3. Those that will progress to 45 degrees or more and probably require surgery. May have earlier surgical intervention involving fusionless techniques. (Thompson, George., 2010).
Genetic testing: One of the most significant advancements in scoliosis during the past 50 years.
This will result in further opportunities for cooperative relationships between the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and Society on Scoliosis Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT).
